A few weeks ago, I wrote an article that taught you what the AIDA formula on copywriting is. And like what I have mentioned on that article, I am going to teach you how to apply the A in the AIDA formula. Today, you will learn how to create powerful headlines. So powerful that it will surely sell your products especially if applied properly! But before I do that, let me tell you one fact: Most successful copywriters today paid over $5000 seminars just to discover the amazing secrets on applying that A in the AIDA formula. I couldn’t afford that kind of seminar, but I did spend $97 just to get a book that tackles the AIDA formula. What do those facts mean to you? Well simply that this information is so important, that you have to pay money just to learn it. Today, I am giving away information that is free for you to use. That’s how important the A in the AIDA formula is. Are you ready? Let’s move on!
Quick recap:
A = Attention
I = Interest
D = Desire
A = call to Action
If you have not noticed yet, when you read a newspaper, browse through the classified ads, search Google for information or check out bids, the first thing you look for are “headlines” or “subject lines”. If the headline does not interest you, you skip that ad and move on to the next. Until you find a headline that interest you enough that you dare read the rest of the article. That’s the same behavior everyone undergoes. All consumers behave this way. So why are you screaming “Buy now!” on your ads when you yourself know that you ignore those type of headlines? This is why the A in AIDA formula is most important.
If you cannot get readers to read past your headlines, your products will meet doomsday sooner than you think!
Here are a few tips that you need to know on how you can grab readers’ attention effectively:
1. You are not selling to everyone. Yes, this is true. Stop dreaming that your product is the best in the world. Nobody really cares about your product except for those people who want and need it. Before you start drafting your headline, identify your market first. Then pose an offer to them. Do not pose an offer to everyone else!
2. Pose a question that your identified market will surely read. How? Create a list of questions that your market thinks of everyday. Like: “It is only 10am and I already feel tired, what do I do to stop this aching lower back?”, or “My daughter’s going to be in college 3 years from now, how can I pay her tuition fee?”, or “I have got to stop this head ache, it’s killing me. Is there a better medicine out there that will cure me fast?” You see, people love talking about their problems. If your headline catches their reptilian brain, they have no choice but to read the rest of your sales letter/capture page. And hopefully, they buy from you at the end of their reading.
3. Sell benefits, not features. If you sell a computer and tell possible customers that your computer has a built-in firewall, then you are simply selling a computer with a built-in firewall. So what? But if you sell the benefits: “Ma’am, buy this computer that has a built-in firewall. The firewall protects you from VIRUS and hackers. With this package you get more security against identity theft. Now, you do not have to worry about your MySpace or Facebook accounts getting hacked. Your children get the same benefit.” Now can you say “so what?” to this offer if you know you’ll benefit from the package? I did not think so!
